Greg McEwan - Trumpet
Greg McEwan was born and raised in Shrewsbury where he attended Meole Brace Secondary School and later New College in Wellington. He studied trumpet with Dave Heywood and Ian ‘Jock’ McKenzie before moving on to study under Wesley Warren of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO).
He then gained a place at Birmingham Conservatoire where he continued to study with Wes and later with Jon Holland (Principal Trumpet of the CBSO). Greg successfully graduated in 1994 with two Associate of the Birmingham Schools of Music (ABSM) undergraduate diplomas in Teaching and Performance and a Graduate of the Birmingham School of Music award in Performance. Whilst at college he studied conducting with Andrew Mogralia and Steven Meads.
Greg quickly became a sought after freelance musician in various settings including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Svengali (twice winners of the Musicians Union Big Band Competition) and numerous pit bands for theatres around the Midlands. Recently, Greg was musical director for ‘A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum’ in the newly opened Severn Theatre, Shrewsbury.
After working for Dudley Music Services, Greg gained his Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in 1999. He has since been promoted to Head of Department for a number of schools and is currently at Wood Green High School in Wednesbury. He is still in great demand as a teacher and freelance player in addition to being Principal Trumpet for the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra for fifteen years (this has included playing the spoons for one concert!).
In his spare time, Greg enjoys hacking his way round a golf course and spending time with his family.
